Ghee: does ghee burns fat? does it help to lose weight? and some health benefits of ghee and why you should include ghee in your diet. Ghee or clarified butter is made from the cream of milk and it has been a part of Indian cuisine since a very very long time and hence most Indians are familiar with ghee. Many of you grew up on ghee right from childhood; it must be your mom or dadi or nani who mixed ghee with hot steaming rice or on parathas and you must have enjoyed it during your childhood. And some way along the road, you just assumed that ghee is fattening and you totally avoided it, am I right?
Ayurveda says that the consumption of ghee offers a wide range of benefits including clarity of mind and a sound digestion. That means ghee helps to sustain a healthy microbes in the GI tract to promote effective digestion and elimination. It nourishes all the tissues of the body, including the nervous system translating into a calm energy through out the day. So, wanna beat stress? include atleast a tsp of ghee in your diet.
Those with a constitution of vata and pitta will benefit most from ghee. The short chain fatty acids (SCFA) in ghee promote fat burning and also promotes healthy bacteria in the gut and this is the reason why I use ghee in my recipes. Another important reason as to why I use ghee in my weight loss meal is because ghee reduces the glycemic index of the food. this ensures that there is a slow, steady rise in blood sugars and you will have better energy levels through out the day. If you have thyroid issues, pcod/pcos, diabetes, or if you are overweight; then ghee should definitely be in your daily diet.
Ghee has the highest smoking point about 450 Fahrenheit and do you know why this high smoke point of ghee is important?. Well, heating oils above their smoke points destroys the essential phytonutrients and can result in an increase of free radicals (and may be carcinogenic).
Apart from sunlight, you need to include foods that provide Vitamin D like eggs, mushroom, sardine etc in your diet. This vitamin D is fat soluble hence healthy fats like ghee is needed for Vitamin D absorption. Other healthy fats that can help in absorption of Vitamin D are flaxseeds, milk, olives etc.
So, ladies if you are pregnant or lactating then, you need an extra dollop of ghee in your diet to boost your Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a critical role in regulating thyroid glands. For those with pcod/pcos issues ghee will help to absorb vitamins especially A, E, and D. The short chain fatty acids in ghee will keep the intestinal mucus healthy and also ensures good digestion. Remember, ghee enhances the absorption of nutrients.
So, ghee with its vitamins A, D, E, K, K2, and ClA (conjugated Linoleic Acid) promotes weight loss, keeps the gut healthy, strengthens the immune system, hydrates skin, makes hair grow thick, and nourishes the nervous system....'translating into calm energy and clarity of the mind through the day'.
Studies also shows that ghee help protect from cancer.
The SCFA in ghee is pre-biotic meaning it creates an environment in your gut for the friendly bacteria to prosper. Lack of probiotic bacteria also gives belly bloating. The SCFA in ghee actually helps to break down fat!! So, need any more reason for including ghee in your diet?
