Beef Samosas (Kerala Style)


Beef Samosas or Kerala Style Beef Samosas always reminds me of Christmas Holidays, my grandmother (ammachi) used to make this for us. We used to munch on this during the evenings reading comics....those were good old 80s.

For me, Christmas is not only about baked goodies ; cakes and cookies.....it is also about beef cutlets, samosas, beef ularthiyathu, pineapple wine, squashes, diamond cuts....cousins, family bonding....


I made these samosas with whole wheat flour....and it can be made easily if you have the filling ready....I used beef; you can also use chicken or mutton.

You will love these samosas with all the spices.....so very Kerala Style....crunchy and crispy and juicy and spicy inside...YUM!


Ingredients:
For the beef filling.
Beef: 250 gm, cooked with salt and minced.
Onion: 1 large, chopped.
Green Chilly: 1 or 2
Ginger: 1/2 inch, grated or chopped finely.
Tomato: 1, chopped.
Turmeric Powder: 1/4 tsp.
Kashmiri Chilly Powder: 1/2 tsp.
Garam Masala: 3/4 tsp.
Pepper powder: 3/4 tsp.
Vinegar: 1/2 tsp.
Salt to taste.
Coconut oil

For the samosa:
Whole wheat flour: 1 cup.
Water.
Salt.

Method:
I used my food processor to chop the onion, ginger, and green chilly. You can also chop them with a knife.


Heat a 1 -2 tablespoon of coconut oil in a pan, and add the chopped/minced onion into it. Let it fry for a few minutes. Then add the red chilly powder, turmeric, garam masala, pepper powder and lightly fry it till the raw smell vanishes. Add the chopped tomatoes, vinegar, and salt; and fry a bit...then add the cooked minced beef or chicken or mutton. Stir well until all are incorporated. Keep aside... the filling is ready....you can make this ahead even a day before and refrigerate it.


Make a dough with whole wheat flour, water, and salt....I have already done a samosa post,  please check for detailed samosa wrapper making process here.

Once the dough is made lightly grease your hand with oil and again knead it to a soft pliable dough....pinch off lemon sided balls from the dough.....flatten it in a round disc shape dusting with the flour so that it does not stick. This dough is similar to my roti/Indian flat bread dough.

Make a flat disc with the dough and cut into half and fill 1 tbsp of the meat filling and close the seams...just press the seams.

Heat coconut oil (preferably) in a kadai and fry both sides of the samosas.

Place it on a napkin.

Serve hot with coffee.....kids would love to dip in tomato sauce.
